Issues Home Abortion for Sex Selection

Ending the life of a baby boy or girl because of his or her sex is an acute form of discrimination. A 2006 Zogby poll showed that 86% of Americans support banning sex selection abortions.

In Kansas, abortion for the stated purpose of sex selection is prohibited by law, since 2013. However, the difficulty in ascertaining truthful motives for abortion remains an impediment to reliable data on its occurrence.

The vast majority of sex selection abortions are performed to eliminate a baby girl because the parents prefer a boy. A 2008 National Academy of Science published report, based on census data, examined "son bias" in America and concludes,

"We interpret the found deviation in favor of sons to be evidence of sex selection, most likely at the prenatal stage. Since 2005, sexing through a blood test as early as 5 weeks after conception has been marketed directly to consumers in the U.S., raising the prospect of sex selection becoming more widely practiced in the near future."

The researchers examined families from cultures with a preference for sons - parents of Chinese, Korean, or Indian descent. However, they only included families in which ALL of the children had been born in the United States.

Using the 2000 U.S. Census data, the researchers found that the sex ratio of the oldest child was normal, but that of subsequent children was more heavily male if there was no previous son. In other words, mothers who had previously given birth to a daughter were more likely to abort a second daughter in favor of trying for a son. The disparity was even higher for women who had previously given birth to two daughters.

Abortion for the purpose of sex selection not only victimizes unborn baby girls, but often their mothers, who face intense pressure from their families to produce a son. Read this testimony to learn more about the coercion applied to some Asian-American women to abort their daughters.
